‘What is written without effort is in general read without pleasure’

Dr Samuel Johnson

Published works by Robert Coulsdon

A few months after his wife and daughter die in a car accident, John Morrison is made redundant and commits suicide. His suicide provokes protests and Jack Docherty, the man who made John redundant, is kidnapped and held responsible for John’s death. The kidnappers use sensory deprivation to induce the same emptiness that drove John to suicide. But the reason for John’s suicide may not be as simple as it seems – there are other people who may be equally or more responsible for his death.

It’s the start of a nightmare when Laura’s former boyfriend discovers she has a new relationship. Darren insists that it’s him who decides when their relationship is over, despite Laura ending it when he went to prison. He threatens to punish Andy, her new man, unless Laura agrees to a humiliating proposition. When she refuses, Laura and Andy find themselves facing Darren alone, except for a small number of close friends and, ultimately, the Marsh brothers - two men more frightening than Darren himself.

Jonah is homeless and wanders the streets. Grateful and grumpy in turn, smiling when people give him money and scowling when they brush him aside. He’s an observer, a looker-on, and sometimes a trigger for other events. Some of these stories are about him, in others he’s just a passer-by - there fleetingly, as the people around him live out their own stories. Welcome to the world of Jonah and his ‘friends’.
